SMS Love is an interactive digital performance, which plays out in the public spaces of the real world and the internet, spreading messages of love.
The project was conceptualized by Gül Kozacioglu, performance artist living in Copenhagen, yet working between, Paris, New York and ?stanbul. The project commenced in 2005 in Berlin where she was then working from when Gül found herself at the center of a synergic questioning of time and space, brought about by a constant influx of text communication between her various city bases. To Gül, these SMS messages represented a new poetic genre, reminiscent of Beat, Haiku and Sufi poetry in their creative, instant expressions of love and daily life. The first digital performance was actualized in september 2008, on the Yama Screen in ?stanbul, and followed in Copenhagen, with a street projection on Ny Ostergade in February – March 2009.
In the performance, a telephone number is spread through various mediums, inviting people to send messages of love to the world. The contents of the received messages are filtered by a 'Love Dictator' digital choreography program, written by Onur Uyar, matching them up with a related dance in which a 'Love Dictator' dances for free expression and against the hidden presence of censorship in the public space; whereby she erases all references to nationalities in her dream of a perfect world without boundaries.
The performance takes place in public spaces which vary according to the dynamics of the nominated city, eg. a media screen in central Istanbul or a wall projection in downtown Copenhagen.
